Yard and Shop Operator

JOB SUMMARY

The Yard and Shop Operator runs and maintains concrete recycling and aggregate processing equipment, including crushers, conveyors, screeners, and loaders. Day to day, this person loads, sorts, and processes recycled materials, operates heavy equipment such as skid steers, wheel loaders, and excavators, and keeps the yard running safely and efficiently. The role also covers daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs, including welding and fabrication, with larger repairs coordinated as needed. The position works closely with truck drivers, customers, suppliers, and coworkers on material handling and yard operations, keeps production logs and maintenance records, and helps maintain the grounds and shop through mowing, watering, operating the broom, and washing equipment. 

 Responsibilities:

  • Run and monitor concrete crushers, conveyors, screeners, loaders, and related equipment 
  • Operate skid steers, wheel loaders, excavators, and other heavy equipment safely 
  • Load, unload, sort, and process recycled concrete and aggregate materials 
  • Perform daily inspections, routine maintenance, lubrication, and minor repairs on crushing equipment 
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and operational problems and coordinate larger repairs when needed 
  • Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, grinding, and general mechanical repairs 
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work yard and shop 
  • Water the yard and operate the broom for dust control and cleanliness 
  • Wash equipment as needed 
  • Mow and perform basic maintenance of green areas 
  • Communicate with truck drivers, customers, suppliers, and coworkers about material handling and yard operations 
  • Complete maintenance records, production logs, and equipment inspection report 
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on project needs  

 Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have experience operating heavy equipment, basic mechanical and maintenance skills, and the ability to safely work with crushers, conveyors, screeners, loaders, and other yard equipment. This position requires strong attention to safety, the ability to follow instructions and complete records accurately, good communication skills, and the physical ability to work outdoors in varying conditions while performing hands-on yard and shop duties.

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 100 pounds; heavier items with assistance 
  • Constantly standing and walking throughout the workday 
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing 
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain, in trenches, and around heavy equipment 
  • Repetitive use of hands and arms to handle tools and materials 
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces when required

  • Rarely: 1–10% of the workday
  • Occasionally: 10–30% of the workday
  • Frequently: 30–70% of the workday
  • Constantly: 70–100% of the workday

 

 Work Environment

 Work is performed primarily outdoors on active construction sites with exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, moving equipment, and other construction-related hazards. Employees must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all safety requirements.
